“So he kissed you again?”

“Ebony, keep up. He almost kissed her again.”

“He loves you.” Ebony clutches the tiny pooch at her belly.

I sigh and take a giant bite of my turkey on rye. Then, super lady-like, with my mouth half full, I say, “He doesn’t even know me.”

“You’ve known each other for two months!”

Iris lifts one shoulder. “In Ebony language, that’s two years. You have to remember that she and Jet were married after a month of knowing one another.”

“Hey.” Ebony moans. “You sound like Beth. Where is my sweetheart sister?”

Iris giggles. “I’m still here. Those are just the facts, Eb.”

“Guys,” I say, getting back their attention. “It hasn’t been two months. I didn’t even respond to him for a month.

“Whatever!” Ebony says. “It’s been long enough. And Alice loves you too.”

“It does sound like you hit it off with Alice.”

I swallow and rest my head in my hand, my elbow propped on the table of the booth we sit at. “She does like me. I like her. I liked them all.”

“Except for stupid Levi. I’d like to punch that guy right in the nose.”

“Ebony—stop with the violence. Besides, I think there’s more to it,” Iris says.

I agree. “I think she’s right. As much as I’d like to tell him he’s a jerk, he’s still my brother. We share a mother and a father, and I just can’t.”

“But you did tell him to shove off. Basically.”

I shrug. “I won’t be pushed around. But I think, for some reason unknown to me, this is just as difficult on him as it is on me.”

“When do you go back?” Iris asks.

I wrinkle my nose, remembering how Coyne looked at me when I told him. “I reminded Coyne that technically I have Saturdays and Sundays off and that I haven’t used an ounce of my leave until now.” I bite my cheek.

“So?” Ebony’s head lilts, waiting for my answer to make sense.

“Friday. I’m taking off Friday again and spending the weekend.”

“So flying? Again?” Iris’s arched brows raise. Her pretty blue eyes stare unblinking.

“Yes.” I sigh, my heart racing with the thought. “I’ll have to fly if I want to have any time with them. Jude said he’d come get me. It costs me nothing but time. I can’t pass it up.”

Ebony studies me. “But you wish you could pass it up?”

“No!” It’s not Jude, and it’s not the family—I want to spend time with them. “It’s just the flying. It always sets me off.”

“If you can remove a stick from a llama’s side and stitch them up, you can do this.” Iris shivers. “I saw those pictures, ew.”

I pull in a breath. “That’s right! Eb, wanna see?” I pull out my phone, only to remember with Ebony’s groan that we aren’t looking at pictures of my job right now.

Ebony holds her butter knife out toward me. “No!”

I hug the device to my chest. “Right. Sorry,” I hiss, smiling so that I show every one of my teeth.

“New subject!”

“Ah.” I look from Ebony to Iris.
